"arriving in london" or "beautiful weather, finally!"

5/22/12 - 11:57pm London
5/22/12 - 06:57pm New York

Hey Journal!

This morning we headed off to London, and the weather was AMAZING for the first day since we got here!

We woke up at 8:05 and got ready for our breakfast at 8:15. While we ate, we talked to a woman who was on a long trip from Australia. She was very nice, and she said she has been driving around England for weeks! She went to the town where her father was from, and she did some family history research as well!

I had eggs and sausage for breakfast, and then a bowl of cereal.

After breakfast, I worked a little on the payroll for work! Today, I had to get all of the hours from work, and submit the payroll so that people could get paid! Yikes! Luckily, it was pretty easy to do, and didn't take too long!

When I was done, we hit the road, and headed for London. As I already mentioned, it was such a beautiful day out! I was so excited!!

I finally got a chance to wear a short sleeve shirt! I brought so many of them, and so far I haven't worn any! I even bought a hoodie yesterday at Primark, and the minute we walked out of the store, the sun came out, it got nice and warm... and I never wore it at all! I guess I should have done that sooner!

So, we drove back to London and returned our rental car at the airport. We took the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station this time, instead of the tube as we had done in the past. It took only 15 minutes to get to central London! It was pretty convenient, but it's also pretty expensive. Dan wanted to do it because he didn't want to have to lug the suitcases up and down the stairs in the underground! It was only about a 5 minute walk to our hotel from the station. When we got here, we checked in, but our room wasn't ready yet.

We checked our bags, and then went out for some London adventures!

First, we went to the Imperial War Museum, and it was pretty cool. We checked out the exhibits, and spent a little while there. After that, we came back to the hotel to get settled in our room.

Once that was all sorted out, we were pretty hungry, and so we set out in search of food!

We went to a pub, and I had a steak and ale pie. It was good. I love pub food, but it's so hard to eat on a regular schedule when we're always running around and stuff.

After we ate, we took a walk through Kensington Gardens and then rented bicycles from the Barclay's Cycle Hire!

We had wanted to do that last year, but never figured out how it worked. This time, we almost weren't able to because the kiosk wasn't working right!

First, there is a 1 charge for 24 hours of access to the Cycle Hire system, and then there is a charge for your rental period. The first 30 minutes are free, and then it's like 1 for the hour.

The machine kept resetting when we were using it, and there was a girl there who was also trying to use it. She couldn't get her tickets out, and it was crazy. We finally got it to work, and they print out a little paper with a 6 digit code on it. You type that into one of the bike docks, and it releases it for you!

We took our bike, and rode through the park! It was pretty fun! I liked it a lot! THere are stations like this all over London, and you can take the bike from one place and return it anywhere else! It's really cool, and I think New York should have something like this. It's really fun, and also practical for people who work or live here.

We just stayed in the park, and didn't go on the roads. We were afraid of cars and all that... so we figured we'd stick to the safety of the park.

We returned it on the other side of the park just before our free 30 minutes were up. Then we walked back to our hotel, and got here around 9. We went in the pool, then came back and took a shower.

After that we rested up and spent some time in the room, and now it's time for bed!

Tomorrow we're going for a London walk, and spending the day out doing fun things!

Goodnight. :)
