"phoenix to vegas" or "pre-debate at unlv"

Hey Journal!

Well...today was a really random and interesting day! It wasn't at all how I expected it to be but I'm really happy with how it turned out.

We got up this morning at our hotel in Phoenix and headed down for the breakfast. I had my daily waffle and then we went back up to pack up and vacate.

The plan was to hit the road for Las Vegas! We have tickets to see Britney Spears tomorrow and we also have tickets to go to a debate party nearby. (Busy day tomorrow!)

Along the way, we made a couple of detours to see some interesting stuff. First, we went to Cave Creek because someone had told Dan it was a cool place to see. It was very old-fashioned...or, as Dan kept saying... "authentic!"

It was cool, and I'm glad we stopped. Then we continued our journey. It was about a five hour drive but we made some stops along the way that kept it from feeling quite so long.

Our next stop was for lunch. We went to a diner along Route 66 which was supposed to be this amazing experience. The place was old-fashioned-looking but other than that it had nothing going for it. I got the grilled cheese which had RAVE reviews online and it was terrible. It was just this sad limp sandwich with a couple of fries on the plate.

I was still really hungry after leaving and wound up going to Wedny's to get something to fill me up. I had 4 spicy nuggets and a chicken sandwich. That was much better than the diner. Dan and I also got Frostys! (We may also have finally caught a Charmander! Yes!)

Back on the road, we made a slight detour to see some ghosttown that I read about. It wasn't all that great. The story of the town was cool but when we got there there was one visible building that was kinda dilapidated and then the rest were on the property of some mining operation that owns the property now. From what it looks like, there wasn't anything much to see inside, though.

We headed back and then we made it to Vegas around 5:00.

We went right to the campus of UNLV because that's where the debate is tomorrow night and we saw on their website that CNN and MSNBC had a setup and we wanted to see what was going on. Anderson Cooper's show started at 5, so we tried to get there for that!

We parked the car and then headed over. The first thing, right away, we stumbled upon the MSNBC setup. The way that the stage was set up we were in a perfect spot to be on camera! It was amazing. I texted Linda and she saw us in the background! It was so wild.

Next, we went over to find the CNN area. AC360 was on and we tried our best to get in the shots. Unfortunately, at the CNN area the stage was raised more and so most of what made it on camera was big signs that were higher up. We did, however, make a few good appearances.

We talked to two people there. One was a person who was standing in front of us and Dan's parents took a photo of us on the TV and he was in it. He asked Dan to send the photo to him so he did.

We stayed until the end of the show and then everyone ran to chase Anderson Cooper who mad ea really fast exit. Dan and I hung around a while longer and we wound up seeing some of the other commentators who had no following at all. Nobody was chasing them around!

Dan got a selfie with one of the women.

We started talking to a guy who was standing directly in front of us for a lot of the show and he was really nice. His name was Jordan and we wound up going to get something to eat at In-N-Out Burger with him.

After that, we had to find a hotel. We hadn't booked anything and were hoping to find a reasonable rate on a hotel that was in proximity of the debate AND the Britney concert tomorrow. Jordan came along for that ride.

We wound up settling on the Hard Rock Hotel which is just off the strip. It's perfect because it's a quick walk to the debate for tomorrow and then we can hurry back to the Planet Hollywood for Britney afterwards.

Once we checked into the hotel, we went out and took a walk and got some drinks. We dropped Jordan back off and then we headed back to the strip. We took a walk to the Venetian and Palazzo and located my favorite Willy Wonka slot machine! I can't believe it -- there are now FOUR versions of this machine and still only one is the best. First, there's the actual reel one. DOn't like it. Then, version two is our favorite. The video slot with the Oompa Loompa bonus and all that. Third is a flat-ish looking one with weird square boxes. And fourth is a new one with a wide-screen type thing. Not a fan. The second one is by far the best!

Anyway, we walked down the strip a ways and Dan played some Let it Ride. He won a little there which offset our losses from the Wonka machine earlier. For the entire trip, our gambling is break-even.

So, after that we came back to the car, back to the Hard Rock, and now we're in the room, showered up, and READY FOR BED!

I'm exhausted and even hungry so I have to get to bed NOW! Can't believe it's so late!

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
