"la romana, dominican republic" or "valentine's day"

Hey Journal!

So today our shipped docked at La Romana in the Dominican Republic! We were here once before, on the Carnival Breeze! I think they;ve redone the port area a little since our last visit. I remember the long walkway up a hill to the area with the busses but now there are new buildings up there. I think there used to be just one little rundown bar.

Dan and I got breakfast around 10:15 and then headed off the ship. We didn't have any excursion planned but we walked around to see what was going on. This island has only a very small area that you can go without having defined plans.

So, we sat down for a while and watched some wild woman with a shell-skirt dancing to music and trying to attract customers to their little bar.

Eventually, we went over to the information desk and asked what kind of tours they had. There was one called the "Chu chu Tren" which was a train-like car that took you on a tour of the historical and interesting parts of town. You didn't get off, it was just a 50 minute loop.

We decided to do that so we got tickets and then got on the train. La Romana was interesting to see and I'm glad we took this little tour. I'm also very happy with what we decided to do. The town is really rundown and there wasn't much else to do.

We had two police on one motorcycle follow our tour the whole time and when we went past the parks, people would come running up trying to sell us water and soda. Then, people started driving up next to us on motorcycles and trying to sell cigars and stuff! It was so wild.

At the end we were dropped back off at the port and we headed back on the ship. I got some chicken wings for lunch and then met Dan at the Ocean Plaza for Golden Girls Trivia at 1:15. I was really excited for this first, because I'm a Golden Girls fan and second, because I really really wanted to win a Ship on a Stick and this seemed like a good chance.

Of course, there was one woman there who proclaimed she would be the winner and, sure enough, she was! Eye-Roll!

The girl who did the trivia was named Fluffy. She was fun. After the GG trivia, we did another one where you had to name the person she described. Of course, we lost that one, too.

Finally, it was time for Card Sharks! We played the 80s game show that I watch all the time at lunch at work! Here's one I thought I could do! The rules were simple.... turn over five cards in a row and win a Ship on a Stick! Three cards, a medal.

A few people went first and Dan was trying to count the cards because she was using only one deck so he was trying to remember how many of the high cards had already gone by!

Dan went up and got all five! Bam! He won the ship! When it was my turn I was kinda hoping to win the medal but, of course, I struck out with nothing!

After that, we went up to the deck, Dan got a hamburger, and I walked around for a while. Dan sat on the deck and read his book and then at 4:30 I came back to get him to watch the ship sail away.

We waved goodbye to the people at the dock and this time, unlike the last time, we didn't see anyone come running down the hill having just missed the boat!

At about 5:00 we went in the hot tubs in the Serenity area. It was a little busy up there but we were able to find a spot. We stayed in there till about 6:30 and then came back to the room to get showered up for dinner.

Of course, today is Valentine's Day! So it's a fun year spending Valentine's Day on the cruise for a little change of pace! There really weren't many Valentine's activities on board -- there was a V Day trivia...but we didn't go and I have no idea what it was anyway.

We went to dinner a little earlier than usual and we requested a table for two overlooking the rest of the dining room. The woman who assigned us a table was completely incompetent and gave us a table all the way in the back corner of the restaurant overlooking nothing and behind a big pillar. What a bitch. We told the hostess, and she brought us back and they reassigned us to another table.

Our servers tonight were terrible and the food took forever to come.

It was definitely the longest meal we've had on the ship so far. We finished after 9:00 and headed over to the Liquor Tasting. It's weird, they gave like three liquid to taste but, as Dan pointed out, you'd think they'd be something you may not have tried before-- since it is a TASTING and you'd want to taste something new. Instead they let you sample Absolut Vodka or Kahlua today....things most people have already sampled. I mean, I was fine with that because I liked the Absolut and didn't want anything else...but it really doesn't make any sense.

Next we went to the "Liquid Lounge" which is the replacement for the theater on this ship for the Love and Marriage game. That was pretty funny, and right after it was over we went to the "white party" in the main lobby.

We hung out there for a while and danced a little and then headed to the Lido deck, got some food, and now we're ready for bed!

We're docking at Bonaire in the afternoon, so we don't really have to do anything in the morning. I want to sleep nice and late!

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
