"if you're going to san francisco"

Friday, August 29

Hey Journal!

Today we got up at 5:30, and got ready, and got a taxi to the airport. There was a slight complication with that because we had called last night to make reservations, but for some reason it didn't come, so we called the same number again, and they said they had no record of it, but would send one. The cab came, and we got in, and as we were getting ready to go, ANOTHER cab from a different company pulled up looking for us! So the two drivers started arguing, and then started talking in a different language. It was very annoying, cause it was very strange that a different company would come for us than the one we called, and who knows why, or what shady dealings were happening, BUT... I wanted to go... I was in no mood to listen to these guys bicker.

So, we finally got to the airport, got our rental car, and then started the drive to San Francisco. The drive takes about 6 hours on the regular highway, but we wanted to take the scenic route which rides right up the California coastline the whole way. It's windy and crazy, and takes 8 hours!

We passed a town, I forget the name, but it had a giant sign that said "WELCOME TO _____, HOME OF SPLIT PEA SOUP"! I loved it. I wanted to get a picture of it, but sadly, I couldn't!

We did that, and halfway up on US-1, we stopped at San Simeon to see the Hearst Castle. I had seen a show about it on "Chasing History Home" on one of the VOOM TV Channels, and I was really excited to see it. We bought our tour tickets and it started with a 40 minute movie and then a two hour tour.

When we got out of the car in the parking lot, I was shocked that it was SOOOOO cold! It was really chilly. much cooler than LA. I changed my clothes before the tour, and put on my jeans and all!

The tour was really cool, we had to take a bus ride up this big mountain and then the "castle" is up there. It is a really insane place with all of the artifacts and antiques that the house was built with. It's just a huge and crazy house. The pools are amazing, too!

Anyway, after that we had a little lunch at the cafe there because there was nowhere else around. We got macaroni and cheese and a ride bowl with some sort of steak. It was really good, surprisingly!

We then continued our drive, and it got really interesting as the road got all windy and so close to the edge of these big cliffs. We stopped a few times at a couple of overlooks and took some pictures.

We finally arrived in SF at about 7, checked in at the hotel, and then drove to the city where we ate dinner at a restaurant called the Eagle Cafe on Pier 39 of Fisherman's Wharf.

After dinner we walked around for a little while, and now it's time to get to bed! I'm exhausted and we have lots to see tomorrow!

Goodnight. :)
