"mr. toad's wild ride - through 5 states in one day" or "fall foliage"
Hey Journal!
Today we started our journeys at 6:00am! We got up and got ready to go.. and hit
the road. Our destination was Brattleboro, Vermont! It took about four hours to
get there, and we broucht some snacks and bagels for breakfast.
We stopped at the Vermont Welcome Center and got some crochures of stuff to do
and see. We got to the town of Brattleboro and looked for somewhere to eat. This
must be the town with the fewest restaurants in all of the country. There was
nothing. Dan asked a woman at a voter registration table outside of the post
office what there was for breakfast, kinda like a diner, and she directed us to
a Thai food restaurant, and an italian place. Not breakfast. lol
We looked up on the GPS and found a restaurant called "Bickford's Family
Restaurant" and decided to give that a try. Unfortunetly, it was not there when
we arrived. We decided to just give up and find the nearest Burger King. We were
driving up the road, and saw an OLD OLD OLD school Pizza Hut. We decided to go
there for lunch, BUT then we saw the Bickford's... and figured we'd give it a
try.
Inside it was the weirdest old-looking place. It was so strange. We were seated,
and we were seated right under one of those things that lights up with numbers,
Like they always used to have a Friendly's but never used... Anyway, THEY USED
IT, and every minute or so it would light up and BUZZ really loudly right over
our heads! It was ridiuclous! lol Our waitress was a nice old lady... much more
normal looking than most of the others! haha
Breakfast was good.. nothing too special, but enjoyable. We then continued on
our journey. We wanted to go to a place called "Santa's Land" which we had
gotten a brochure for.. and also a Medeival Festival that there were signs for
on the road.
On the way, we passed "Basketville" which was a giant store that sold baskets.
So we went in and explored.
Next, we found Santa's Land, and it was a little bit of a dissapointment as it
was really for children, and so we didn't pay to go inside.
We continued on to the Medieval Festival, which turned out to be a really
not-so-interting school fundraiser, with nothing to do.
Now, even though our first two ideas were a bust, that doesn't mean we didn't
have a great time finding these random places and seeing the nice trees and
colorful foliage!
Next we went to Keene, New Hampshire where we drove a route that Dan had printed
out last night on the computer. It took you past a bunch of historical places,
and such. We stopped at a place with old Mills and stuff, and walked aroudn
there. We bought drinks in the "General Store" and wanted to use the bathroom,
but first, the bathroom was occupied, so I went to wait out by the entrance to
the hallway till the person came out, and then people kept coming in the back
entrance and sneaking in! It was awful... THEN finally I gave up when I saw a
bride on line for the bathroom, and knew I would never get in.
We drove the scenic drive, and that was lots of fun. Then we moved on to Nashua,
NH. This city literally SMELLED. We planned to find somewhere to eat there, and
we parked the car, got out, and there was this homeless-looking lady walking
down the street who stopped and started talkign to a man who had a cut on his
face, and she was asking him who did that to him. He said he didn't know! lol
We walked down the street and didn't find much in the way of things to do for
dinner... so we went back to the car and drove back about 10 mins. There was
this Bank of America that was in an old barn-looking building, and the logo was
on the Silo. So weird. We ate at the Texas Roadhouse. It's one of those places
where you throw peanuts on the floor! haha
They said it was a 50 minute wait, but we waited about 15 minutes!
It was very good, I enjoyed. We sat near a scary Armadillo statue. Three
waitresses spointaniously broke out into dance when some song came on. It was
weird becuase only those three did it, and everyone was looking at them in this
awkward way. LOL
We departed, and it was now dark. We amended out plan to head towards Boston,
and so we wanted to do that... but we had no idea where we were going to stay.
So, we saw a Best Western across the street, and we pulled in the parking lot
and whipped out the laptop in the car. The signal strength was weak, but enough
to get a signal. We looked up hotels outside of Boston, and everything was over
100$ for one night. We then went to our reliable La Quinta, and looked up
locations near Boston. They had one in Milford, MA. (About 20 mins from Boston.)
Their price was about $90. This, clearly, was unacceptable... so we used our
Table Tennis ways, that we had used in Rhode Island! We put in the code, and
BAM! $63! Nice! :)
So, we GPSed the hotel, and off we went. We got there around 10:00 and we got
Burger King from across the street. This LQ had a BUGABOO CREEK STEAK HOUSE
across the street, JUST LIKE THE ONE IN RI!! (What the heck is a Bugaboo Creek
Steak House!) So weird. Anyway, we decided that the LQ clientel must love
Bugaboo.
So...we are here now in Milford, MA. The plan for tomorrow is to go to John
Adams's house, and see all of that historical stuff, then make our way to Boston
for the afternoon, and then head home, perhaps stopping at Fire and ICe in
Providence, RI for dinner!
What a crazy and wild ride! Today we were in New York, Connecticut,
Massachussetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire! Wild!
Until tomorrow...
Goodnight. :)
