"netflix goes crazy... again"

Hey Journal!

This morning, I got up and headed off to work. I made pretty good time! There wasn't much traffic at all!

The day went by pretty quickly, and I had a lot of things to do. I went over the stuff Re did from the weekend, and got the money ready for the bank. Then, I had some cereal for breakfast.

The outing today went out late, and was pretty small. Today was also Meghan's Birthday! For lunch, Rich made me chicken fingers with mozzarella cheese on top!

I left work at 5:00 and heaeded home. I watched the news, and then when Dan got home we watched World News. I had my leftover Spaghetti from Fra Amici, and then Dan and I went for a walk around the neighborhood. It's getting pretty chilly out at night, which is kinda sad. Summer is almost over... but it actually was a nice night for a walk.

When we got home, I took a shower and got ready for bed.

I got an e-mail today from the CEO of Netflix, which was billed as an "apology." Basically, since Netflix raised their rates a month or so ago, the company has been in a major tailspin... with over 600,000 subscribers cancelling and their stuck price plummeting!

Anyway, the 60% raise in the subscription fee was the reason that people were upset with Netflix, and so one would expect that their apology would be along those lines, and might offer a reduced rate, since they have seen the error of their ways! WRONG! Instead, the "apology" portion of the letter was that they didn't EXPLAIN in enough detail WHY they raised the rates. So, they went ahead and presented their case.

THEN, they went on to say that in order to take away the confusion, and to make things "simpler," they would be separating their businesses into two separate companies. Netflix for ONLINE Streaming, and Qwikster for DVDs by mail! (Yeah, noone thinks Qwikster is a good name.) Anyway, they went on to explain that the two services would operate completely independently from one another, and that subscribers would have to manage two separate queues, and log in to each site separately. They will get billed separately, and all of their movie ratings would not be shared between sites.

So, basically, the letter was "We're sorry we did something that made everyone mad...only because it caused our stock to plummet. Now, we're going to do something even more stupid, and it's okay because we're telling you about it first, and explaining everything about it before we do it."

Now, I get why they are trying to phase out DVDs, but they can't do that until they really ramp up their streaming content. As of now, they have such a shitty collection of streamable content! This may change, and I hope that it does, but because it hasn't happened YET, it is NOT the time to phase out DVDs!

The comments on the Netflix Blog are, one after another, complaint after complaint, and most of them are pretty eloquently-written, well thought out, and well presented complaints. Before today, I didn't think it was possible for Netflix to do anything worse than they had done last month. Now, it looks like they are going to crash and burn, and we're all going to watch from the sidelines. It's a shame, since Netflix was such a cool, and innovative idea... and I LOVED it. But, it's over... so I guess we have to move on to something new! Don't worry, they are leaving a huge crater behind, and someone is going to show up to fill it!

Anyway, it's time for bed now! Only two more days of work until VEGAS and the GRAND CANYON! Woo Hoo!

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
