"hurricane sandy: arrival"

Hey Journal!

This morning, Dan and I got up around 9:45. We watched some of the storm coverage on channel 7, and then we decided to get out of the house because we knew we'd probably be spending a good portion of the day stuck inside!

It had rained a little overnight, but wasn't too bad. We went out and got some more food at Target. Target was pretty empty, but they had restocked their shelves which had been empty last night. They had lots of bread and snack foods.

After that, we got bagels, and then went down to the bluff in Kings Park to
see the effects that the storm was causing so far! They had the main parking lot closed off, but everyone was parking in the boat trailer parking area and walking in. There were a lot of people there, and the waves were wild! There was no beach, and the water was coming right up to the little wooden steps! The wind was whipping, and water was spraying off the sound.

After we were sufficiently soaked, we headed home! When we arrived, there was no power at all. It was about 1:00, and we were pretty shocked! We expected the power to go out, but definitely not this early!

We decided to go over to Dan's parents' house since they still had power and we figured we could watch more of the storm coverage! Just as we were about to leave, the power flickered on, and we called off the plan.

Unfortunately, it was only on for about 10 more minutes, and then it went out again!

We went over, and we did watch some of the storm coverage, and we hung out there for a while. Dan's mom made some frozen pretzel nuggets, and then I put together a "Cube with Shelf" for Dan's mom. Dan's dad brought home pizza, and just as we were coming upstairs from the basement to eat, the power went out!

Luckily we had plenty of time to charge our phones to full power! Woo!

We hung out for a bit, and then went in search of more electricity! My mom said they still had power, so we went over there.

As soon as we arrived, we plugged in our electronics, but sadly it didn't last long. I went into the bathroom, and as soon as I closed the door, the lights went out. They were out for about 15 minutes, then came on for about another 15 minutes, and then went off again.

We left there around 5ish and headed home. The storm was really picking up now, and even though we had seen some branches and small trees down on our way over there, it was crazy on the way home!

There were random trees down all over the roads, and it was actually hard to get back home! 111 was closed off in several places, and so we took some side roads down by Maple, but everywhere you'd turn, there were MORE trees down! It was like being in a really hard corn maze!

Finally, we made it back here and we ran inside because we were afraid of falling branches. The wind was howling and the trees were swaying like crazy! It was intense! The next hour was definitely the worst part of the storm.

We got in and put our stuff down, and then we heard a loud cracking noise. We think it was a tree falling on the other side of our lawn. We both ran to the bathroom window to look out, and as we did, we saw the tree just outside our window swaying back and forth.

All of a sudden, Dan said "I think it's going down now!" and it started falling towards the street! It crashed down and went right across 111! It fell into a ton of power lines and took out some poles, too!

When it was going down, Dan screamed so loud into my ear as we were both looking out that my ear still hurts.

After it fell, you could see flashlights from everyone's windows shining down on it! It was so pitch black outside that you could barely make anything out! It was really really creepy!

Then everyone went out into the hallway to discuss it!

We've heard that four trees have fallen down so far on the lawn and that they're really big, but we can't see any of them except the one in front of the window!

After that we lit some candles and had nothing at all to do. We don't even have a radio, so we were very cut off from the world. I kept trying to get a signal on my phone, but there was no service! I was able to text and make some calls, but no data at all!

We played a couple of rounds of Phase 10, but then I started to get a headache, and we just relaxed and listened to the wind whipping.

After a while, it started to come down, and hopefully that was the worst of it. The worst part lasted about an hour.

Anyway, we're going to get to bed now since there's nothing else to do, and Dan wants to get up early to go survey the damage and take some photos! It's going to be nuts!

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
