"fraulein maria's bike tour" or "konigssee"

5/17/15 11:03pm CEST

Hey Journal!

This morning we got up at 8:00am and it was toooo early! All I wanted to do was go back to sleep for another hour but we had no choice.... Frauline Maria's Bike Tour was our plan for the day and we wouldn't have wanted to miss it!

We walked down the to Mirabell Palace and along the way we stumbled onto the area where Maria walks up the steps in the The Sound of Music! It wasn't very busy so we were able to take some pictures of us recreating the scene from the movie! It was fun! I'm glad we did that because by the time we got there on the bike tour it was much busier and there were people all around.

Anyway, we were hungry for breakfast but unfortunately NOTHING was open! We walked past a ton of places that looked like they would be great breakfast spots but they were all closed. All of the stores were closed today, too. Sunday is apparently a completely shut down day in Salzburg!

Just before the bike tour we found a little bakery-type place and Dan got a cup of coffee and we each got a small roll. It wasn't really that filling but it was enough to hold us over until later.

We meet up with the bike people and checked in. It took them a while to get everyone checked in and give everyone a bike. Each bike had a name on it... I got the Herr Zeller bike, and Dan had Louisa.

At about 9:45, we started off. We rode through the park and stopped to introduce ourselves, tell where we were from, and what our favorite song from the movie was. Then we continued and to all of the great places from the filming of the movie!

We saw the gate where Rolf stood, the door to the concert hall where they performed, and then headed over to the fountain with the horse statue where Maria splashes water. Next we headed up a giant hill towards the abbey. It was really hard to pedal up the hill! I had to get off the bike halfway up and push! This was where they shot the outside gate of the abbey. The actual church is about an hour away.

After the abbey, the guide put on the soundtrack from the movie and it blasted from one of the baskets as we all rode along the countryside! We saw the back side of the captain's house from the movie and then we went to see the house that was used as the exterior of the Captain's house and where they pushed the car the night they tried to escape!

Next we rode to a park where they have the gazebo from the movie! It started to rain a little towards the end of the tour and it was really cold all day. I hate the cold. I just wish it had been a beautiful, warm day like yesterday!

When we were at the park with the gazebo the castle at the top of the hill looked so far away! I'm not sure exactly how far we rode on our bikes but it was a lot of riding! My watch told me that I reached my daily exercise goal when we got to the gazebo!

We headed back to the center of the city and then we wound up at the steps and the fountain from Do Re Mi!

As we were leaving the final stop and heading back to the place where we had started, Dan and I both saw this kid walking by....he was on our tour of Dachau yesterday! It's crazy because that was all the way back near munich, an hour and a half away. What are the chances that he would not only have come to Salzburg like we did, but also be at the exact same place at the exact same time as us ever again! Pretty wild!

After we returned the bike and paid for the tour we walked back into the garden and looked at the fountain. There was some man in the fountain in only his underwear. He was a weird fat guy and there was another guy walking around the edge directing him to pick up all the coins in the bottom of the fountain! It was soooo strange. Everyone was watching but they were so confused. Nobody could tell what was going on. It was really gross and also really weird.

We walked up the steps to the area with the little troll statues. There, we found another location from the movie!

We headed back towards our hotel but were in search of lunch along the way. We stopped at an Italian restaurant and ordered pizzas. They were HUMONGOUS! We had no idea how big they were going to be. We were pretty hungry from the ride and not really eating breakfast so I was able to eat almost the whole thing!

The thing about food here is like... there's either none and you're starving or there's way too much to eat in one sitting. I wish I could spread it out evenly throughout the day!

Outside the restaurant there were little German kids playing in this waterfall thing on the walkway. They were dressed in traditional German outfits! It was amazing.

When we got back to the hotel we had nothing planned for the day so we decided to take the car and go drive around. We drove back to into Germany and to a place called Konigssee. We saw it on a brochure that we had picked up somewhere and it looked like a cool place. When we got there, you had to pay to park at an automated machine thing and some lady was leaving and gave us her parking ticket! That worked out well!

It was cool to walk around there but there wasn't much to do, really. There were some stores but most of them were closed and there was a lake, but not much going on there, either. I think that if I had to describe it, not that I've really been there, but it is what I imagine Lake George is like.

We walked around there for a while but it was even colder there than it was in Salzburg. We headed back to the city after that and came back to the hotel to take a nap. We slept from about 6:30-7:30 and then got up, showered, and went to find a place for dinner.

We went to a place called Alter Fuchs. It wasn't so brutally cold so we sat outside and ate. We both got the pork wiener schnitzel! I really like wiener schnitzel! lol

There was this group of about 7 American college kids about two tables away from us and they were so annoying! They were loud and obnoxious but that wasn't the worst part.... they were also blasting music from their phones and singing along to it at the table! WHO DOES THAT AT A RESTAURANT? And like... you could tell it didn't even cross their mind that it might be rude to play music at a restaurant. We think they were from Loyola. It makes me embarrassed that people see them and think that Americans are like that!

After dinner we walked around some more and then headed back to the hotel. It's a little early but we have to get up early again tomorrow to take some more Sound of Music photos and then hit the road to head to our crazy mountain hotel in Switzerland! Can't wait!!

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
