"lost in the woods: a hike to remember" or "eye examination"

Hey Journal!

Oh my goodness! Tonight was really a wild experience! I was planning on having a relaxing evening at home tonight but, at some point in the middle of the day, Linda told me that she had to come out to Smithtown and she suggested that we go on a hike. She brought her dog with her and wanted to go to a "dog friendly" park! She did some research online and picked Blydenburgh.

We got there at 6:30 and we took a walk from the car area down to the pond. We checked out the waterfall and I was super-impressed that Connor remembered that I used to call it the "sale and pepper" waterfall.

Linda wanted to walk AROUND the pond and although I had told her the story of the last time I attempted that, we went for it. Connor and Cameron did alright in the beginning and we walked through some pretty cool area, but as it got later and later and it got darker and darker and we were still so far away -- the novelty wore off!

At one point, I think we were near the 347 entrance and there was a dock leading out to the pond. I went to the bathroom and Linda walked out on the dock. Pluto walked right to the end of the dock and straight into the water! It was insane. I came out of the bathroom and Linda was screaming and the dog was swimming around. It was wildness.

Shortly after that was when the true length of think "hike" was starting to hit everyone. Connor and Cameron were hungry and losing steam fast. Sadly, we were probably only about halfway done.

We pressed on and then two things happened at the same time that made for a real challenge. The first was that it got dark and the second was that the trails we took got narrower and narrower until we were basically walking through tall brush and had no idea where we were going. We made one wrong turn right near the end and that kinda led us astray.

At the end, Connor was holding onto my arm and we were basically running through the tall grass trying to find a way out. It was pretty wild now that I think about it -- I can't really describe it.

We were never afraid that we were truly lost because, as I've said before, it's Smithtown! It wasn't a dangerous situation but it was getting a little stressful and Connor and Cameron were so done with walking that it really made the urgency level seem more intense.

Eventually we popped out onto a side street and walked all the way back to the parking lot. Phew! It was about 9:00 when we finally got back to the car. I'm sad I didn't start my walk tracker app! That would have been a good one -- and I would like to know exactly how far we walked! The trail itself is 5.1 miles but we did more than that because we wound up going a little bit of a roundabout way.

It was a real experience and a real adventure. You had to be there. But for all the complaining from Connor and Cameron they both did a really good job and powered on!

And with all that, I almost totally forgot about the craziness that started off the day!

I woke up this morning at 7am on my own and felt wide awake. I went back to sleep until 8 and then I felt tired and groggy. I got read for work and headed off.

My eyelid was still bothering me from yesterday's oven debacle and I was worried that something might be wrong with my eye as well. Visibly there was no burn, redness, or anything else but I felt like I should get it checked out.

I got to work, did a couple of small things, and then called my eye doctor to see if he could see me. They told me to come right away so I headed there. I left work at 9:45 and arrived there at 10:30.

It was crazy -- I should have just called them before I went to work. Anyway, I signed in and I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork because the last time I had visited them was in May of 2013. I can't believe it was that long ago -- it really doesn't seem like it.

They called me in and assistant woman asked me some questions and then sent me back out to the waiting room. They didn't call me in again until 11:30 and then I waited another 15 minutes to see the doctor. I know I was an emergency squeeze-in but it just felt excessive. Especially so because he only spent about 5 minutes with me!

Anyway, here's the verdict. He looked in my eye and checked things out. He said my eye is fine and that irritation that I feel is from my lower eyelid. He gave me a prescription for a special ointment and called it in to the CVS/Target pharmacy. He said I really lucked out that the heat didn't hurt my eye.

Oh, and just after he came in to examine my eye he got a phone call and had to excuse himself for a minute. While he was gone I saw that he had my info up on the screen and my favorite part was that, in the information for today's visit, it said "Mood: Appropriate." I'm so happy I had an appropriate mood.

So, I left there, went to Target, and got my prescription. When I arrived I was SHOCKED to see ALL of the pharmacy aisles were completely gone. It was a vast open space and there were random things like plastic storage containers and paper towels all over the place. They have been doing so much work there lately. They even painted the red walls a weird tan/grey color. I'm a little sad about that because the red was so nice!

Anyway, with my prescription in hard I headed back to work.

The day was kinda slow but I had a bunch of things to catch up on and figure out.

I prepared the vouchers for labor day, did some miscellaneous work, and then had the steak sandwich with mozzarella cheese on top for lunch.

I left work at 5:00 and headed home. And now we've come full circle! Writing things out of order always make for an awkward end ot the journal entry but it also makes for a more interesting beginning!

Fast forward -- After our excursion, we went to Wendy's to get some food. We ate in the parking lot and then Linda left to take the Cameron for a sleepover. I came home, showered up, and then tried to decompress before bed by watching World News.

Now I'm off to sleep and I have to get up earlier than usual tomorrow because Mike is coming to move the cabinet in our kitchen and also install my attic fan. And that's another thing I had to do -- Mike called to say that instead of coming saturday he wanted to come TODAY! So I had to scramble to empty all the pantry and cabinet stuff when I got home. Phew! It's all ready now.... this whole thing should be interesting!

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
