"governors island on the hottest day of the year" or "clambake 2016"

Hey Journal!

Wow!! What an intense and busy day! Oh, and I must add that it was also the HOTTEST DAY OF THE SUMMER SO FAR!!!

Dan and I got up at 8:00 to begin our day and we got got ready and prepared for our tip to Governors Island. We were ready to go by about 8:30 and as soon as we got in the case, the first thing we heard on the radio was that it was going to feel like 110 degrees out today!

As oppressive as the heat was today, I LOVED it. I will not complain about the eat. THIS IS SUMMER! THIS IS WHAT SUMMER IS ALL ABOUT! THIS IS LIFE!! SUMMER IS LIFE!

No joking, come the winter when it's freezing and we have to bundle up to go out anywhere, we will WISH it was this hot and humid out.

So, we headed out to Linda's house and arrived there shortly after 9:00. Dan presented everyone with gifts from Japan. Linda and Dan got a his and hers chopsticks set. Connor and Cameron got an assortment of Japanese Pokemon items along with a few other items.

Shortly after we headed out for Brooklyn. We always try to find free street parking and I put in Pok Pok into the GPS to navigate to the area. We got there and found a great parking spot. We walked over to Pier 6 and got on lien for the ferry. It was about 10:30 at this point and the first ferry was at 11.

I went to the bathroom and put on my sunscreen and then headed back to the line. While we were waiting for the ferry, we noticed a lot of people on line dressed like flappers. People were all decked out in 1920s garb. More and more of them got on the line and we realized there MUST be something going on that we weren't aware of. We knew it was Civil War Weekend, so this didn't really make sense.

Later, once we got on the ferry, Linda looked it up online and it turns out there was a 1920s Jazz Age Garden Party as well! Everyone was sweating like crazy on the ferry -- it was so hot. Once the ferry started moving there was a pretty good breeze and that helped a lot.

When we got there, we walked around, passed the garden party, and headed over to the cannon demonstration that was at 11:30. There weren't a ton of people there for that so we got a good spot on the grass and waited for it to begin. At first, it was really hard to hear the guy because they had the speaker turned backwards. Eventually someone turned it around and it was much better.

They set the cannon off three times but, in between, they did a bunch of "practice" shots and they would do all the motions and then WE would yell "BOOM!" It was kinda strange! lol

After the demonstration, we went to Castle Williams to get the activity book for Connor to get a Junior Ranger badge. We got the books and then found a nice spot to sit and eat lunch. We took a group selfie with the city in the background and then, just as we were sitting down, Cameron realized she had left her little Eevee figurine at the cannon thing.

We packed up and headed back there to find it. I was sure if any other kids had gone by they would have been excited to find a Pokemon in the wild and they would have scooped it up! Luckily, as we approached there were no kids around and Connor walked right over and found it in the grass!

On the way over there, I caught some new Pokemon that I didn't have before in the app! There were a bunch of good ones on the island and in the city. Later on, I caught a Bulbasaur! I also got a Grimer, a Vulpix, and a Sandshrew. Good times!

So, after we found Cameron's thing, we sat on the lawn and ate lunch. It was really hot out but it wasn't terrible in the shade. After we were done with lunch we went back to the Castle so Connor could turn in his activity book. He got sworn in as a ranger and then we decided to call it a day on the island.

We took the 2:30 ferry back over and then walked (pretty far) to get Italian Ices. I had looked up a place online and it didn't LOOK too far away. Actually, it wasn't terribly far from where we had parked the car but it did take a while to get there and it was mostly uphill!

The ices hit the spot, though, so it was all worth it. Next we walked back down to the car and headed back to Linda's house. We were all pretty worn out from the heat and took it easy on the ride home. We got back around 4:00 and then Dan and I hit the road. We got home at almost exactly 5.

We had no time to relax, though, because we had to prepare for the Clambake! We each took a shower and got dressed and ready. I had put out my Clambake clothes on Friday night so that I would be ready for this. I knew we wouldn't have any time to waste!

Tomorrow, Dan's coworkers are coming over to go in the pool and we noticed this morning that there was some algae starting to grow. We knew we wanted to shock the pool tonight BUT we didn't have any shock left.

We left home around 5:50 and stopped at Leslie's to pick some up. It took forever because the person ahead of Dan on line was asking a million stupid questions.

Once we had the shock we continued over to Kristen's apartment and collected her for the Clambake!

We arrived at the golf course around 7:00, just in time to catch the tail end of the first seating wave. Kristen and Dan helped themselves to the seafoods they wanted while I watched, since I don't eat that sort of thing!

We sat at the bar and got some drinks and then we went outside. It was a hot and humid night but there was a good enough breeze that it made it feel nice. One table decided to stay inside instead of eating out on the patio but I think that was a stupid decision. First off, it wasn't really freezing cold inside. Second, even if it was, the whole event was outside. The music, the atmosphere. Inside it was just their one lone table -- it was basically like they weren't at the event at all -- just coming for dinner.

It was an enjoyable evening and we sat out on the patio with Jackie's husband and daughter. We listened to the soothing voice of Norm and just soaked up the summer! The food was good -- I had some steak and potatoes. Dan wasn't able to drink because of he his medication so he was our designated driver. I had a fair amount to drink but I don't think I went overboard or anything.

We hung around until about 11:00 and then we headed home. We dropped Kristen back off at her apartment and now here we are ready for bed!

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
