"edinburgh, scotland" or "the swan house"

5/25/11 - 11:33pm Northallerton
5/25/11 - 6:33pm New York

Hey Journal!

Tonight we're staying at The Swan House in Northallerton, UK! They were supposed to have a WiFi connection, but when we arrived they said that it was down today, and should be working tomorrow! Ahhhh! It's REALLY hard to find Free WiFi in the UK, and when you find places that CLAIM to have it, a lot of times you have to have an account with a cell phone provider to use it!

Anyway, that means I will have to wait again to post this entry!

This morning, we woke up around 8:15 in Carlisle, Cumbria! We got dressed and went downstairs for breakfast! The proprietor had a nice little breakfast set up for us, and we had some cereal, and eggs, sausage, and bacon! It was very good! After that, we headed back to the room to pack up our belongings. We packed them up in the car, and then took a walk around the little town of Armathwaite, and down by the river. There were lots of fields with sheep and cows! Bahhh! Mooooo!

We got in the car and went to the actual city of Carlisle. We drove through, and then headed for Edinburgh, Scotland!

We have basically been doing a lot of driving, and just making brief stops in the towns we want to see. It's been pretty cool, but I am also looking forward to the next few days when we settle in to Witney for a few days!

In Edinburgh, we walked around, and went up to the big castle there! It's all the way up on a giant hill, and it was some walk to get up there! Then we went to the Museum of Scotland.

We returned to the car and headed back down to England! We planned to stay somewhere near Newcastle or York. We stopped in a town for dinner called Berwick-upon-Tweed! We found some random WiFi in a parking lot, and stopped there to look up places to stay for the night. For the first time, we had some trouble finding a place! We called the #1 B&B on TripAdvisor for two different towns and they were both booked. Both of them gave us two MORE numbers to call, or nearby places to try, but they were all booked as well! Crazy! (We had located those using the crazy rental phone, but it was getting too complicated, so we used the laptop, and connected to random WiFi in the parking lot!) We found one called The Swan House in Northallerton, and called! They had availability! Woo Hoo!

We ate dinner at a pub in the town there. As we were parking the car, we weren't sure if we had to pay for parking. We looked around, and there was a random boy sitting in a window... and like.. sitting at the TOP of it! It was a big window, and I have no idea how he got up there, or what he was even sitting on, but he was there nonetheless, talking on a phone. He said that we didn't have to pay to park! Thanks!

After dinner, we hit the road again, and made our way here!

We arrived a little after 10:00pm and the woman here showed us the room. It's really nice, and has the BEST shower! The shower I took tonight was the best shower of our trip so far, hands down! The water was the perfect temperature, and the shower head actually had PRESSURE!! I hate wimpy showers, I feel like it takes so much effort to get the soap off, and it's not enjoyable. This was the complete opposite, and I loved it.

One thing I have been noticing is that it's very common in the UK for sinks to have two different faucets... one for the hot water, and one for the cold water. It's really kinda strange if you ask me. I don't understand it at all! For example, the place we stayed in two nights ago, and the one tonight have this, as well as many of the restrooms we've been in. Now, the problem is that when you want WARM water to wash your hands in, you have to try to avoid burning yourself with the scalding water from the left faucet, while trying to mix it with the freezing water from the right. It's ridiculous! Why would they not upgrade to single faucets? And many of them look brand new, like they renovated the bathroom and CHOSE this! WHY!? So odd!

Anyway, it's time for bed now! Breakfast tomorrow at 9am, and then off to Witney, Oxfordshire for the last leg of our trip! How can it be the last leg already!! AHHH! We've had such a great time, but it HAS felt like FOREVER!

Sleep now!

Goodnight. :)
