"the grand canyon"

Hey Journal!

Greetings from Willaims, Arizona!

This morning, we woke up in Vegas at about 7:45am. We got showered and ready, and then got our stuff together to check out. We had only used $90 of our $100 credit, so we deiced to get something to drink before we left. I got an orange juice, and Dan got a coffee! My orange juice was $6.45 and Dan's coffee was like $4.50. INSANE!! It used up our credit, though! :P

So, we headed out to the front of the hotel and got a taxi! The taxi took us to the airport rental car area, and we went in and got our car. It didn't take long at all!

We were on the road in no time, and on the way to the Grand Canyon!

The drive wasn't too bad.... it took about 4 hours, and most of it was through desert with nothing at all but sand, dirt, and mountains! Surprisingly, there was pretty good cell phone service the whole way!

We were getting hungry, so we got off the road and found a Sonic in the middle of the desert! It was pretty wild, but it had my french toast sticks AND grilled cheese, so I was very happy! I still can't believe that our Sonic doesn't have those things! Ugh!!

We decided not to eat in the car since it was kinda messy, and we needed to take a break from driving anyway, so we got out and ate at the tables.

Our car, by the way, is a crazy Red thing. It's like a spaceship inside... the windows are so small, and it's awkward to look out! I don't really like it all that much, as in... I would never buy this car for myself! The seats are really nice, though.

Anyway, at about 12:00, we arrived at our hotel in Williams, AZ. It's called The Lodge on Route 66! We checked in, and brought out stuff in from the car. The room had a very strong smell of lemon cleaner. lol

We decided to take a walk around the town, and checked out the interesting little stores along the way. Then we came back, got ready, and headed off to the Grand Canyon!

It's about an hour drive from here to the Grand Canyon, and today was actually National Park Appreciation Day (or something like that) so we got in for free! Way to go, us!

Before going into the park, we stopped at Wendy's and got some food to hold us over. I got a baked potato and a frosty!

We checked out the signs and information they had posted, and then went into the visitors center. Then we took a walk down to the overlook just behind the Vistors Center for our first glimpse of the canyon.

On the drive here, Dan and I were talking about what our impressions of the Grand Canyon would be... Would be like like "oh, that's cool..." or would we be really amazed by it! We had no idea.

So, as we walked down and got our first look at it, we were definitley shocked at the size of it all! It was much bigger then I had imagined, and just goes on and on for miles! It's all you can see in both directions! It's was pretty cool!!

We walked along the rim walk, and we went down onto some different overlooks. We climbed down onto some scary ledges with no railings, too! You had to climb down the rocks and all! It was kinda crazy, but definitely fun.

We walked from the first overlook all the way down to the Mather Point overlook, and then we took a shuttle bus back to the main area. We watched a movie about the canyon, and then we took another shuttle bus down to the Kaibab Trail. We checked out the trail, which we are going to walk down either tomorrow or the next day, and then we took the shuttle bus to the Yaki Point overlook to watch the sun set. The sunset was alright, but not as amazing as I thought it may have been. Perhaps from a different spot it would have been better.

Just as the sun was setting, we got on the shuttle bus back to the parking lot, and we headed headed back to the hotel. The ride seemed to take forever... maybe because we were so tired! :P

When we got back, we searched for somewhere to eat, and so many of the places around here closed at 9pm, it was so strange. So, we wound up driving to Flagstaff which is about 30 minutes away, and went to a Cracker Barrel.

Now we're back, and ready for bed! Tomorrow we're going to get up relatively early and go to some nearby towns like Sonoma, and -- something I'm really excited for -- a ghost town! AHHHHH! :) You know all I really want to do is relive The Brady Bunch Grand Canyon episodes! :P

Alrighty...time for bed!

Goodnight. :)
