"governor's island"

Hey Journal!

After a year of saying that I wanted to go, we FINALLY went to Governor's Island today!!
And what a crazy long day it was, too!!

We got up around 8:30 and got ready to head out. We packed some waters, my spray fan, sunscreen, and stopped on our way to get some bagels. We got to Linda's house around 10:00, and Connor was laying under the table, refusing to brush his teeth!

Soon we were on the road, and we had planned to stop at a deli to get some sandwiches for lunch, but we forgot about that, sadly. We weren't really sure what to expect from Governor's Island, but we figured we'd just let it happen, and make it a day of adventure!

We got to Brooklyn and located the park. We decided to park in the parking garage instead of on the street. I had printed a coupon $16 on my favorite NYC Parking Website... but there's a story about that later!

While Dan waited for the parking garage, we got out of the car and headed into the park. There were a lot of fun playground areas there... The first area we came upon was "Slide Mountain," it was pretty cool... they also had a misty jungle trail, a "Water Lab," and "Swing Valley" (Although Swing Valley was lame, and didn't have enough swings.)

We had fun at the playground, and then we headed over to the free ferry to Governor's Island! It was about a 5 minute ride across the river, but the boat was PACKED on the way over. We had to stand. Dan and Cameron were upstairs, and me, Connor, and Linda were out in the front of the boat downstairs.

When we arrived, we walked up the hill and stopped for a minute to see a glass-blowing demonstration. Then we continued on to Fort Jay. We wanted to check out the fort, and there wasn't too much to see there, so we just wandered around. Connor found an area that had a big sign that said "Restricted Access," but upon closer examination, it appears that you were allowed to go in.

We went down, and it went underground, and there were weird rooms with giant metal doors where they apparently used to store ammo and explosives! It was actually pretty cool, and the most interest part of the whole fort!

Then we went outside, and Connor and Cameron ran around in what looks like it used to be a moat around the fort. Then we relaxed on the grass for a while before continuing our exploration. They had a big tree house and a weird mini-golf area as well.

There was also a little fair going on, and we went to the Disney table, and they got to spin a wheel and win a prize. They got a lot of free Disney DVDs, a bouncy ball, and an inflatable yellow thing that we later decided was a dice, but it had no dots on it. (More about that coming...)

The island was really cool, and I like the whole history of it. It think it's also really cool that you can look over and see lower Manhattan, and you're on this island with all old buildings, but then then the modern city is just across the river.

It felt like we were there for a looooooong time, but it was only 3:00 when we got on the ferry back. We spent a little more time at the crazy playgrounds, and then we headed back to the car. The place that we parked was a DISASTER. First off, they refused to accept our coupon EVEN THOUGH we got in online and the rate was GUARANTEED for the date/time that we were there. I am going to dispute the charge as soon as it posts.

Then, it took about a half hour for them to get our car out of the garage! They were a mess. Everyone was standing around waiting, and the cars weren't coming. They didn't even have any idea as to what cars they were supposed to be brining. They were so disorganized, and unhelpful. Worst parking experience ever.

Linda yelled at some guy and we finally got our car! Then we were on the way home! Connor and Cameron fell asleep in the car, and were out cold the whole way back. We decided to go to Friendly's for lunch. We went to the one in Hicksville, which was pretty nice.

Connor woke up when we arrived, but as soon as we got to the table, he curled up in the booth and fell asleep! He slept through the entire meal!

I got a grilled cheese and soup, which is listed under the sandwich column on the menu. Directly above the list of sandwiches, it says that all sandwiches are served with fries. I didn't get any fries. When I asked the waitress about it, she said that mine doesn't come them. I was annoyed, but didn't say anything. When I got home, I looked up the menu, and sure enough, it's clear as can be... all sandwiches come with fries. I am so annoyed. She jipped me out of my fries. And she wasn't even nice, or FRIENDLY! What a beast.

When we were done with Friendly's, we had to do a little shopping at Target. We needed to get more of those nose strips for Dan! He finished the box last night. We wound up doing a big shopping excursion there! Connor sat in the cart and read a book almost the whole time.

After Target, it was about 9:00, and we headed back to Linda's house. We inflated the big yellow thing that we won at the Disney booth, and couldn't really figure out what it was. It had weird clear pouches in the side, but nothing to go in them! We decided it was a dice... and so we made the dots on construction paper, and slide them in! Then, to try it out, we played "A Day at the Races" in the kitchen. We each put our shoes on the floor to represent us, and then rolled the dice. We moved the shoe forward when our number came up!

Cameron was the winner, followed by Linda, Connor, Dan, and me! It was a really fun game! I was number 5! "NUMBER 5 IS ALIVE!!!"

We hung out for a while longer, and then at about 10:20, we departed for home! We were EXHAUSTED!! On the way, Dan wanted to stop for a slush at Sonic, so we did, and this time we finally remembered to ask for spoons. I always get halfway done with it, and can't get any more up the straw!!

So, we got home and I took a shower... Now it's time for bed! I feel like I can't keep my eyes open any longer!! What a long day! It was a full day though, and we were outside and doing summery things!! I LOVE SUMMER!!! :)

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
