"spontaneous fall foliage excursion"

Hey Journal!

This morning, we got up around 8:30 and got our things packed for a little fall foliage weekend. A couple of years ago, we drove up to Vermont to see the leaves changing color, and we figured since we had nothing planned this weekend, we could do a similar little getaway.

We had a map of where the best fall colors would be from the news and so we headed that way. Instead of going towards Vermont like we did last time, we went west and then north. Because we had no set plans, we kinda just winged it.

In the city, after crossing the Throgs Neck, there was a bout an hour wait to get to the George Washington Bridge. We were not into sitting in traffic, so we got off, and I used the map to navigate us to the Hutchinson River Parkway. We started heading north, and wound up taking the Saw Mill River parkway over to route 17.

It was a nice morning, and the weather was perfect. The only problem was, as we drove, we noticed that most of the trees were already bare and dead looking! It was terrible! I consulted the fall foliage map, and it said this area should have been ALMOST PEAK! What the heck!?

As we headed further north, the colors got better, though. We made good time and stopped a couple of times along the way.

We drove through a rain storm which wasn't too conducive for seeing fall foliage, but we made the most of it, singing Backstreet Boys songs!

We got to Binghamton around 2, and decided to see if our friend Alec, who goes to Binghamton, was available. He was, and we took a walk around... he filled us in on the happenings up there, and then we went out for lunch. We went to Texas Roadhouse. I got a steak with mashed potatoes and steak fries. It was very good!

After lunch, we went to one of my FAVORITE upstate attractions... Wegman's! I loooooove Wegmans! I looked for the famous gingerbread hand soap that we got there a couple of years ago, but sadly they don't have their Christmas stuff out yet! Usually, I complain that stores jump the gun on that, and the one time they don't, I actually need it!

I did, however, manage to pick up some Wegmans "Crisp Rice" cereal! Nice!

Then we headed back to Alec's and we saw his dorm and stuff. We hung out there for a little while, and then we continued on our journey!

One thing I really wanted to do was go to a CORN MAZE! We called the Broome County tourism number and asked if they knew of any good corn mazes, but they knew nothing. What the heck are they even good for!! I looked online and didn't find anything substantial, either!

We made our way back south down 81 and into Pennsylvania. I've heard they had good corn mazes, but perhaps not in the area we were in. We did, however, see some more nice fall colors, and made a couple of stops along the way.

One of our stops was for a Sonic slush, and I got a grilled cheese, too.

Our original plan, much like the last time we did this, was to see where we would end up, and then look for an inexpensive hotel nearby. The only problem was, the weather wasn't too great tomorrow, and we couldn't find anything we REALLY wanted to do the next day. We decided to cut the cost of the hotel, and just head back home.

We got back here around 10:00, and although it didn't turn out exactly how we had planned, it was a really fun day. Who would have thought we'd do all that when I went to bed last night! It was nice to get AWAY, even it was just for a day! All in all, it wasn't really that expensive. Maybe $60 total after gas and tolls. That's $30 a person. I can think of a lot less fun things to do that cost that much money! lol

When we got home, I took a shower and just relaxed. We watched another episode of Breaking Bad, and it's not that late considering all we did today!

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
