"the blizzard of 2013 - continued"

Hey Journal!

So, I slept extremely well last night and if it was super windy last night, it didn't wake me up at all!

I got up around 9am and had to get out of bed to see what was going on outside. I looked out and everything was covered. Well, it looked pretty much like it did last night before I went to bed only the snow was higher! According to the news, we got about 30 inches here in Smithtown! This area had some of the highest snowfall totals on Long Island! Lucky us!

Anyway, I was tired so I went back to bed. I got up again a little before 12. Dan and I watched the news, and the best part was Eyewitness News was right by the mall! They were covering all the stranded cars on 347! It was cool to see our area on the news, but it was such a ridiculous scene! The people in these cars were not in danger, and they could open their car doors and stuff... they just couldn't drive because their tires were stuck. Anyway, the reports just kept making it out to be like they were cold and in danger of hypothermia or something!

Then, I kept wondering why she didn't go over and talk to them... but then once the fire department people went to check on them, she went over and nosed in on them! It was soooo awkward because the fire people were trying to do their job and she was butting in!! Then she did the same thing with a couple of other cars! I just didn't understand why she didn't go to those people when they weren't in the middle of something else! THEN, everyone she talked to was like "Oh we're fine... we had gas, just kept the car warm...." They all downplayed the whole thing they the news people had been playing up! I loved it!

Dan went out and wanted to start clearing off our cars, so he went out and did that and I baked a cake. Devil's Food with Funfetti! When Dan came in from shoveling, I made eggs for breakfast. We ate and watched some TV.

Then we decided to go out and see what the scene was like out there. Most of the main roads had some snow still on them but were passable. Many of the side roads had never seen a plow. It was pretty much what you'd expect after so much snow. Some areas had been cleared away really well, but most weren't that great yet. You also had to keep driving around cars that had been abandoned or completely plowed in on the roads! It was wild!

We went over by the mall, but the great bastion of commerce was closed! I was actually kinda surprised! Their parking lot hadn't been plowed at all. Usually even the mall will be open if the stores are closed!

We were going to stop by and say Hi to my mom, but their road wasn't plowed at all, so we just kept going. Before heading home, we went to Target in Commack which was OPEN! Surprisingly, it was the only store we saw today that was open! We went in and looked again to see if they had any puzzles. Dan asked a girl there and she asked someone on her walkie talkie. They confirmed that Target no longer carries puzzles. How terrible is that!!!

I guess if it doesn't blink or require batteries, they can't sell it. God forbid a kid should play with something that will really stimulate their mind. Puzzles like that, and word puzzles, are so good for your brain.... it's a shame the things they push on kids now are so mindless.

So anyway, we got a couple of things.... milk and apple juice, and then headed home.

They did a little bit of plowing in our parking lot and had cleared out our spaces because our area was empty (we had parked across the street.)

On our way home we stopped at ShopRite to get a movie from the Red Box. I had another coupon code, so I was happy to get a movie for free! There was a line for it, and there weren't too many options. I figure that's because people either wanted a movie to watch tonight or weren't coming out to return movies they got last night! We wound up getting Iron Man 2.

When we got home, I put some photos online from the past month, and then we watched the movie. I had seen about 20 minutes of the movie on the cruise one night... they were playing it on the big screen outside.

It was good, a little slow at one or two parts, but otherwise I liked it.

Then I watched some Reba, and when the news came on at 11, we watched to see our area again! NJ Burkett was live from the Good Steer! Amazing!

In other news, the Smithtown Bowling Alley has collapsed! The snow on the roof was too heavy and it caved in! Then, as the roof came down, some water pipes were severed causing the building to flood! The water came out of the building and was streaming onto the train tracks! The train line was closed anyway. Then, there was a gas leak. So, they turned the electricity and gas off to the building, so now all the water is going to freeze in there! What a mess! I think it may be the end of our beloved bowling alley!

It's really weird, but the Smithtown Bowling Alley is a real fixture of the town. I don't know why.... but it is! It's really sad that this happened. They may have to knock it all down... and will they rebuild? Who knows. We were just there a couple weeks ago with everyone and I remember specifically talking about how random the place is, but how it has so many memories for all of us!

I also liked how they had such old school scorekeeping computers. Now, if they rebuild... they'll probably put in a new one and I won't like it as much! Sadness!

Anyway, they reported from there on the news, too! We're really on the map now!

Oh, and one last night... I HATE how the Weather Channel thinks it can NAME storms now. NO. YOU. CAN'T. It's not up to you. I also love how so many networks completely ignored it and called it the Blizzard of 2013. Good for them. Who do these people think they are!?

Now I am just getting ready for bed, and we'll be getting to sleep soon!

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
