"wedding" or "AU, DC, and OPOT"

Hey Journal!

Today we set our alarm for 9am and as soon as it went off we put on our clothes and went downstairs to the breakfast area!

They didn't have a very wide selection of foods but overall I was happy because they had a few choices for me. I ate hash browns, a waffle, some cereal, and orange juice. The cereal wasn't good at all... it must have been some kind of generic brand that is much cheaper and grosser.

The hash browns were amazing and so was the waffle!

When we were done eating, we headed upstairs to our room, got changed, and ready to go out for the day.

Dan really wanted to go visit her old school so we drove over to American University. Luckily, there was no fee to park in the parking lot over the weekend so we parked and walked around for a while. We went to the bookstore and got an American University cup and Dan got a new Alumni sticker to save for whenever he gets a new car.

Next, we decided to take the AU shuttle over to Tenleytown and then take the Metro into DC. We wanted to go to the Old Post Office Tower. We went there a long time ago and I remember it being a really cool view of the city, so we thought that's be a good thing to do!

We got our Metro tickets and we were on our way. I really love the DC Metro! I love how weird/dark it is down there, and the way the ceilings are designed. It's so cool!

We got off at Metro Center and it was a really short walk to the Old Post Office Tower! I had to take my belt off when we went through the security check and it was such a pain in the neck because I was wearing my seatbelt belt, and it's sooo hard to get on and off! I would have rathered taken my pants off with the belt on them!

I didn't remember this before we went, but the Post Office Tower is FREE! Woop Woop! We rode the elevator to the top and checked out the nice virre of the city. We also saw the mechanism that controls all of the giant clocks on the side of the building, and it's amazing how its really just controlled by this one little motor that turns a whole bunch of gears that are just the right size to make everything work!

We walked down the stairs to look at the bells and then took the elevator back down.

Next, we saw some sort of commotion going on over on the National Mall so we decided to go see what was happening. It turned out to be the Library of Congress National Book Festival! We got a free tote bag and then wandered around the pavillion where each state's Library association had its own booth. They gave out some free stuff... pencils, bookmarks, stickers... it was pretty interesting. Then we wandered around to some of the other tents where authors were giving speeches. It was a pretty nice event!

They also had this card with all 50 states on it... and if you went to each state's booth and got your card stamped, you could come back and get this little miniature tote bag for free...but it was foolish because the nice big orange tote bags we got were being handed out freely to EVERYONE, so... why would I want to go through all that trouble just to get a not-as-good one!?

When we were done perusing the Book Festival, we took the Metro from Smithsonian to Metro Center and then Metro Center to DuPont Circle... we had to get out at DuPont circle because the train was being taken out of service, and we had to wait for another one to arrive and take us the rest of the way to Tenleytown.

There, we stopped at Panera for lunch! I was extremely happy because I looked online and saw that they had my favorite Cream of Chicken with Wild Rice soup today! When we got there, the lady told us they DIDN'T HAVE IT! REALLY? Dan told the girl it was on the website, and somehow, magically, they wound up having it... so it all worked out!

While we were waiting for our food, some girl threw up all over the floor by the pick-up area and she was crying and it was quite a mess. I missed the actual event, but I saw the results all over the floor.

We ate, and then hurried out to the bus stop to get the AU Shuttle! We got back to the school and walked to our car and headed back to the hotel.

We got back to the hotel around 3:30 and Dan went to the gym while I took a shower. We had to get ready pretty quickly because the shuttle bus for the wedding was picking us up at 4:30 in front of the hotel! The wedding was at a country club that was right behind the hotel. It probably would have been about a 10 minute walk, and we had actually planned on walking there, but it started raining around 4, so luckily the hotel provided us a free shuttle!

Dan and I got ready and we went to the elevator to head to the lobby. Everyone was in the elevator when it got to our floor, so we were all set!

We got the shuttle and headed over to the location. Because of the rain, the ceremony was moved inside and we found seats. The ceremony was supposed to start at 5:00, but it didn't start until about 5:30.

It was a little bit of an odd ceremony because the guys didn't walk down the aisle with the girls and the music was weird, too. Someone with an iPad was playing music in the corner and the songs were all little snippets and it was a bit disjointed.

The ceremony was nice and it was also pretty short. After the ceremony, we went to the cocktail hour which was located in the hallway behind the room where the ceremony was. It was a little cramped, but it wasn't bad. We hung out, milled around, and waited for the doors to open onto the reception room.

Dan and I were at Table 13. So were Brian and Jessica. My name was spelled wrong on the placecards.... it was spelled with two Ks instead of 1! Interestingly, we all had assigned seats at our table! The other people at our table weren't very talkative.... other than Brian and Jessica...we didn't know anyone at all. The girl directly across the table from me just stared at her salad the entire time like she was in a coma.

They didn't play any music in the beginning of the reception. It was kinda strange. We waited and waited, and finally dinner was served. After dinner, they did play some music and people got up to dance.

The real excitement of the evening came a little later when it was time to cut the cake. Dan and I were right up front, about as close as you could get to what was going on. We watched them cut the cake and then, in a split second, something happened. I don't even know what... I was right there... I thought I was looking.... but I didn't see anything! Dan's cousin Sara got mad and stormed off... leaving her new husband standing there. At first, it looked like he wasn't sure what was going on, and it looked like he wasn't sure . Then, when he realized she was mad and had stormed off... he yelled "You're FUCKING KIDDING ME!" And he stormed off! Everyone gasped, and then the room got QUIET! The DJ put some music on quickly, and everyone was trying to figure out what was going on!

Nothing like some DRAMA to spice up the evening. They were gone for about 40 minutes or so, and the party continued without them. Eventually, I suppose they worked out their differences and returned to their party.

At about 10:30 thing were starting to wrap up... Dan's Uncle left, and so we figured it would be a good time to head back to the hotel. Dan's dad was going to call the shuttle bus, but he wanted to wait until the last possible minute, so Dan and I hitched a ride with Dan's AUnt and Uncle and they dropped us off at the front entrance of the hotel. (It was still raining outside!)

When we got back to the hotel, I had a bowl of chicken soup and we got our pajamas on. It was so nice having a microwave in the hotel room because I would have been soooo hungry otherwise! It really makes the difference... remembering to pack things like that!

Anyway, now we're just hanging out... watching the news, and talking about what we like and don't like for weddings!

Tomorrow we plan to get up around 9:00 and go have breakfast. Then we'll take our time packing things up and get ready to leave. We're in no real rush because we're going to see Chvrches in the city and that doesn't start until 7pm! We'll get on the road, maybe stop for some food on the way, and then spend some time in the city!

We won't get home until late... and then we have work on Monday! Yikes!

Anyway, until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
