"mattress" and "couch"

Hey Journal!

Happy Labor Day! It's been such a whirlwind weekend, it doesn't really feel like a holiday today. (Not that Labor Day is ever all that exciting, anyway!)

This morning I got up at 8:00 and Dan slept a while longer. I went downstairs did some laundry and some unpacking. As soon as Dan was ready, we went out to get some breakfast and do some shopping. We went to McDonald's and I got the "Big Breakfast."

Next, we made plans to go furniture shopping with Dan's mom. She wanted to drive separately because she was going to go golfing later, so we met at the Fortunoff Backyard store on 110.

Before we went there, though, Dan and I stopped at Home Depot in Commack to get a garbage pail. We realized just the other day that we didn't have one... and that's something you really do need right away! We found a nice Rubbermaid one with a lid and wheels. We both remember the price being about $28.00, but when we got up to the register we realized there was no sticker on it. Neither of us really wanted to walk back to the garden section, so the woman looked up the item on the computer. It came up $19.97 which is much less than I had thought, but we were totally okay with that.

We also got some of those little rubbery bumper things for the glass tables. The original ones had fallen off so many times and gotten dusty and gross looking. It's amazing that with all the moving and stuff we still have them all, anyway!

So, we got to the Fortunoff place, and it was terrible. Just like the one by the mall, all the items were wayyyy overpriced.

Next we headed South on 110 and our first stop was at Sleepy's. We tried a bunch of mattresses and we found one that we really liked. We wanted to try out some more, and in the end we had it narrowed down to two choices. With their Labor Day sales, they were only $50 price difference, and we went it the more expensive one. When I layed on the mattresses, I was so tired! I felt like I was going to fall asleep right there!

While Dan and I set up the delivery and stuff with the guy, Dan's mom was trying out all the adjustable beds!

The mattress is going to be delivered on Thursday in the same time window as the alarm system is going to be installed! That's pretty nice that I can get both done in the same day.

With the mattress out of the way, we had only one mission... a couch! We went to a no name place on the same side of the road but their sign claimed that they sold "the finest brands." We found one that we kinda liked, but it was kinda high priced, and I don't REALLY feel comfortable buying from a place with no brand name. Here's why: Normally I don't care about brand names. In fact, I think the brand names make the stuff more expensive because they spend so much money advertising and branding. However, in this situation, even if that is the case... if I had a problem with the furniture, I would feel much better knowing that a big company is behind it. I feel like they would be more responsive to a complaint and care a little more about their image.

Anyway, after that place, we turned around and went north on 110. We stopped at Ashley Furniture and we found a really nice couch that we both really liked. Sadly, it wouldn't fit. It was too long on one side of the L and it wasn't at all customizable.

Next we went to Jennifer Convertibles. The sales lady there was nice and a little wacky. She showed us a couch that we both really liked, but we took some time perusing the other options. We saw some other we liked as well, but the prices were higher and they didn't look as sleek. Eventually, we wound up right back at the one we had started at. It's funny because some of the people we saw at the other couches wound up there, too. They all were saying the same thing about this one looking the nicest.

We wound up buying it, and it came with a big ottoman. I have always been torn about having an ottoman vs. a table, but I think this will work out. And if it doesn't, oh well.

We added another two-seater to make it longer on the side that face the TV, but when we got home we re-measured and found out that it would be too long!! Yikes! We called back and switched to a single-seat. At least it wasn't a big deal to adjust that.

The only complaint I have about Jennifer Convertibles is that when I went to the bathroom, the bathroom had no soap, no paper towels, and no toilet paper. Eek. To top it off, the sales lady shook my hand when I left. Just think... she's stuck there all day with THAT bathroom? She must have feces all over herself.

Once we had spent all the money I could stomach for the day, we went to Target and then to get lunch at Boston Market. Someone in line gave us a 50% off coupon for a family meal, so instead of getting individuals, we got something to share.

After that, we went home and did some more unpacking. Shortly after, my my came over with my Aunt and the triplets. They got the grand tour of the house and then we hung out for a while looking at my old yearbooks. Some of their teachers are in it, so they enjoyed that! We also watched a couple of classics like the "Stuck at the Beach" video!

Later on, Dan and I went to Target and got some frozen food. We really need to stock up since we have almost no food at home now! We do have a lot of cereal, though. I can't wait till we have all our food stocked and we can actually eat when we're hungry again!

On the way home we picked up some more stuff from Dan's parents' house. We got some dresser drawers, some clothes, our toaster oven, and some bathroom stuff.

We got home, showered up, and then watched the first episode of World News Tonight with David Muir. I can't believe they started him on a holiday! What a joke. They would never make Diane work on a holiday, and meanwhile, they probably have their lowest viewership of the week today so you can see just how much they wanted to make a splash with David. :/

Now we're gonna watch Teen Wolf and get to bed! I can't believe it's back to work tomorrow. It seems like ages since I was there. It's still so surreal that we have a HOUSE!

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
