"welcome back julio bbq" or "2x2s aren't really 2x2"

Hey Journal!

This morning I woke up around 9:30 and I just couldn't get back to sleep. I had woken up around 8:30 to go to the bathroom and then I was only half-sleeping the rest of the time. I got up and did some random stuff around the house until Dan got up around 10:30.

We didn't get much sleep since we didn't get to bed until about 3am last night! It was a fun night but I felt like I was going to be exhausted today. I actually got a burst of energy though in the afternoon, so it wasn't so bad!

Our first order of business was to go out for breakfast. We went to Relish. There was no wait, which was very surprising. They got new menus....they appear to be the same as the old ones as far as what's on them, but they're landscape instead of portrait and I'm not sure I like them as much. Maybe other people don't either and that's why there was no wait today! lol

Anyway, I got the Egg Special. I usually really like it but today it was kinda overcooked. It almost seemed like it had been under the heat lamp too long. The egs had a weird crust to them and the potatoes were overdone and the ham was curling at the edges. :/

After breakfast we went to Home Depot to get some things we needed. We really wanted to work on our new picnic table for the backyard so we picked out a paint and color for the new legs we're making. We got some bee/wasp spray because we've been seeing a ton of them under the carport, and then we got a post and a little holder for our hose on the side of the house. Finally, we went to the lumber area to get some 2x2 pieces of wood. Admittedly, we probably should have measured them, but the sign said 2x2, so we bought them and headed home!

We were at Home Depot FOREVER! I felt like I just wanted to get out of there. It was also ridiculously hot inside the store for some reason. It was actually cool outside but inside was terrible! I couldn't be in there another minute!

One the way home we stopped to get gas in my car and then we got right to work. Dan opened the box with the new tabletop and I got the extension cord and the saw to cut the new legs to the right length! Imagine our surprise when we put them in and found out they were not anywhere near 2x2! I got the measuring tape and it measured 1.5x1.5!

I figured we picked up the wrong item and that we'd have to bring them back to the store and get the correct ones. Anyway, we were running late for going over to Julio's, so we hurried up and got ready and headed out!

It was a "Welcome Back, Julio" BBQ at his mom's house! He's back from London this week, but he'll be back there while we're there for our trip in a couple of weeks, and then he's heading back home again right after our trip!

We got there at 2:30 and when we first arrived we had some food, I had stuffed shells! Mmmmm. We hung out outside for a little while but it was kinda chilly out there so we headed in. Most of the day we just hung out and talked and caught up with Julio. His friend Sam was there and all of his family and stuff. It was really great seeing Julio and we had a really fun day!

A little later on, we sang happy birthday to Julio's sister and then we had ice cream cake! Julio was fascinated with Carvel's new branding! We also watched the Kentucky Derby -- mostly because it was on the TV and there was nothing else to watch. What a crazy thing....they have four hours of filler all leading up to a 2 minute rance. It's ridiculous! I mean, maybe and hour would be okay, but even that's pushing it!

We left Julio's around 9:00 and then we headed home. When we got home, we were pretty tired but we picked up the table legs and hauled them back to Home Depot. And here's where we learned an important lesson.... We hadn't picked up the wrong item....2x2s are actually 1.5x1.5! Who knew!? We returned them since they don't fit and we looked all over for something we could use! There was nothing! We even looked at banisters and stuff. They had some things that were 2.5 inches... everything was either too small or too big. You'd think a piece of wood 2x2 wouldn't be THAT hard to find, but it is. Now we're going back to the drawing board!

The man at the store said it's all about the millwork! They start with a 2x2 piece of wood but they plane it and finish it and it winds up being less. I really think they should probably just call them by the size they are when they sell them to you. It seems only right!

Anyway, we came home empty handed and then we watched Thursday's American Crime!

Now it's 11:05 and we're off to bed! Tomorrow we're driving my Grandma, my mom, and my Aunt Regina up to Cold Spring for a baby shower! Should be an adventure!

Until tomorrow...

Goodnight. :)
